Firstly one of the key actors, Dave Grey, who played the Mayor dropped out. At short notice Daniel Whittle, who played the Brigadier in Jubilee took over the reigns and made an excellent replacement. Large portions of the story also had to be recorded with actors in separate sessions and then pieced together in post production, which pretty much doubled the time it took to make. Then a foolish editing mistake resulted in the loss of all the Doctor's lines from the scene where Sarah Jane, Morris, the Mayor and Doctor are reunited. The scene had to be rewritten so that the doctor had no lines (apart from one I had left over from another episode). Shame really as it was quite a key scene. I've included the script at the end for the "missing" scene. Anyway, it got done in the end, and only about a month over schedule, and the good news is that it's a full 10 minutes longer than the last one, weighing in at a hefty 41 minutes! Sadly the VQF has mangled a lot of the sound quality. This is our best sounding story yet, with the master recordings sounding crystal clear broadcast quality. You will be able to purchase the full resolution master recordings on a CD ROM and get to hear it how it was intended! Howard, July 1999. MAYOR But none of this makes the slightest bit of sense. MORRIS Don’t you get it MAYOR Del Maestro? DOCTOR Only you can see it’s not him. MAYOR Yes, it’s not him for sure. So who is it then? DOCTOR The most evil man in the Universe, and my sworn enemy. He is known as The Master. If he’s around here, then I can only begin to imagine the atrocities to come. MAYOR (incredulous) You’re serious! DOCTOR Never been more so. It’s imperative that we track down the Master immediately before he gets a chance to... Sarah Jane and Morris have just run up and interrupt... SARAH JANE Doctor!! DOCTOR Sarah Jane! MAYOR Morris! Where on Ralladon have you...? DOCTOR Please, we’ll have time for recriminations later. SARAH JANE (distraught) Doctor! I must warn you. It’s the Master.. He’s here. He locked us up. I thought we were never going to see you again. DOCTOR THere, there. It’s okay. You’re safe for the time being. Do you have any idea where he is now? SARAH JANE No. We left him behind in the dungeons beneath Del Maestro’s house. But doctor... it was horrible. He’s killed the real Del Maestro... shrunk him to the size of a puppet. DOCTOR That doesn’t surprise me. There’s no depths to which that man won’t stoop. So how did you end up at the theatre? SARAH JANE There’s tunnels that connect the two. Huge labyrinths beneath the ground. The Master has your Tardis down there too in a laboratory, but there was a monster. DOCTOR Monster? SARAH JANE Yes. I recognised it - we saw one before on Antilovia. It ate this man whole. It was horrible - I never want to see anything so gruesome ever again in my life. MORRIS But I think it’s gone now. At least for the time being. That’s how we got out. DOCTOR Right. Then that’s where we’ve got to go. Can you lead the way back, Morris? MORRIS Okay Doctor. If you say so. MAYOR Are you sure it’s safe? DOCTOR No, I’m not. But we have very little choice, believe me. Are you coming? MAYOR Of course. With you all the way. DOCTOR Good. Sarah Jane? SARAH JANE I’m not leaving you now, Doctor. DOCTOR Then it’s all four of us, together. Come on. Let’s go and find the Master. CROSSFADE TO: KATE That’s the man! Over there, with the MAYOR. The one who pushed in the theatre queue. Are you coming Mark? I’m going to have a word with him this time. MARK Yes. That man’s asking for a black eye, behaving like that. Looks like they’re going into the theatre. We’ll have him cornered, friends with the MAYOR or not! They run after the Doctor. MARK (cont’d) (shouting) OY YOU! YOU WITH THE SILLY SCARF!! CROSSFADE TO: MAYOR Hello? SARAH JANE There’s someone chasing after us, Doctor. DOCTOR Odd. MARK Yeah, you. You think you’re important don’t you? Pushing infront of my wife like that? Stealing the last theatre tickets? DOCTOR What? I’m sorry. Is this relevant? MARK I’m this close to thumping you one, you know. You better be prepared to make it up to us, or else... DOCTOR (aside) People seem to have got very aggressive these last few days. MAYOR I was thinking the same thing myself, Doctor. DOCTOR We really don’t have the time for this now, my good man. MARK Don’t you “my good man” me! I want you to come to the theatre now and buy me and my wife replacement tickets, to make up for the disappointment you caused her the other day. DOCTOR Okay, okay. Come with us. We were going to the theatre anyway - though I don’t think you’ll like what you find there. We’re all in terrible danger at the moment - you don’t seem to understand. MAYOR It’s okay Doctor. I’ll deal with it. Look, I can assure you, you and your wife will have royal box seats for the next performance. Will that do? KATE Ooh, I like the sound of that. MARK Ok. Ok.. I suppose that’s more reasonable. We’re coming with you now though, to pick them up. DOCTOR *sigh* Come along then. But we’re going in the back entrance.
