The Regeneration Of The Daleks by Howard Richardson Episode 2 SCENE 1 IN REST ROOM (More lift music) Adric: He's quite mad, isn't he doctor? Dr: Well, they say there's a fine line between madness and genius. Davros was once the greatest scientist in his field, you know. Adric: So what went wrong? Dr: Oh, the lure of power can corrupt even the great. In Davros' case he turned his bitterness about the ancient Thaal war and his feelings of helplessnes because he was confined to his wheelchair outwards, projecting it as pure hatred against every other living organism which wasn't of Kaled blood. And hate is very dangerous emotion. It eats away at your morals from within. LHC: (enters) The council is now in recess Doctor, but I have spoken with the Lord President and we agreed that we shall our head matrix-officer-in-command, Sidgin Theta to investigate. Dr: Sidgin Theta!!! The man is a clueless buffoon. Why, last time you sent him on a mission I ended up having to pull him out of the mouth of a wormhole he'd steered his TARDIS into. LHC: But Doctor... Dr: No. No. I really couldn't sleep at night, knowing that the future of Earth is in his hands. I shall set off straight away. Tell Sidgin to go and take a holiday. I hear the Sea of Tranquility is quite pleasant this time of year... Come along Adric. SCENE 2 In Davros' vaults on Earth. Davros: Why is progress so slow? Everything must be fully operational. Dalek 1:Shall I question the prisoner? Davros: Where is he? Dalek 1:He is working on the machine. Davros: Then, YOU will make sure it is complete for the arrival of the Doctor. You will not fail me. Dalek 1:I obey. (incidental music) SCENE 3: Basement of a library on Earth. TARDIS dematerialises. Door opens Adric: And you really think that you'll be able to track down the village purely from those matrix-printouts of the stone? Dr: Oh I'm sure of it. There really can't be that many memorials of that design in England. A quick scout about the reference section here and I should be able to locate it's whereabouts. Adric: But this is just a basement, Doctor. Dr: (dramatically) Yes, but above, what wonders we shall find... Adric: What wonders? Dr: Books, Adric. Books, and lots of them. (fade out, fade in again) In Library. Dr: (Flicks a page) Here. What do you think? Adric: No, I don't think so. That one's a bit taller, and there's no church in the background. Dr: Yes, yes. You're right. (flicks again...) Here, perhaps? Adric: Hmmmm, similar, but not quite the same. (pause. flicks a page) Look! Doctor. This looks like it. Dr: Aha! Yes I think you're on to something there. What does it say? Adric: (reads) The Mattedene stone is significant in Suffolk history, due to the curious inscription it bears. Although the stone seems to be a war memorial from the middle ages, it's inscription pays homage to soldiers killed in a war in the year 2002. Scholars are undecided about the stone's meaning. Dr: That's it! That's it! Where is it again? Adric: (reads)Mattedene, a small rural village of 400 inhabitants in the county of Suffolk, England. Dr: Good work, Adric. Then Mattedene is our next destination. (music..) SCENE 4 Arrives in Mattedene. Windy. (Door opens)) Dr: (chuffed) ha! What a landing, eh? Bang on target! Adric: Yes, look. There's the memorial over there. Dr: Good, then shall we pay a visit? (they walk together to the stone) Adric: Just what are you expecting to find, Doctor? Dr: Ooh, I don't know. Prrr..Hidden dalek armies? Time bombs? Biological breeding grounds? Killer standard-lamps? You never know with Davros. Whatever it is, you can be sure it won't be pleasant. (they walk a bit further..) Adric: It's creepy, that church, don't you think? Dr: Creepy? No, no. Just old. Those arches and spires are typical of the gothic period of architecture. Adric: But those carved faces... they stare... Dr: The gargoyles? Nah, they're just made that way to scare off evil spirits from a place of worship. They're essentially benign figures.... Now that chap at the top is a different matter. Adric: Who's that? Dr: The weather vane in the shape of a demon. Can't you see? Adric: err.. ah, yes. I can. Gosh, it's quite ferocious isn't it. Dr: Hmm yes, and that's not the oddest thing about it... Adric: (puzzled) Sorry? Dr: Lick your finger and test the wind. Which direction is it coming from? Adric: (does this). From the direction of those fields over there.. Dr: Yes. That's what I'd say too.... Now look at our friend perched on the top of the church... Adric: Yes, you're right. It's moving, but pointing in quite the wrong direction. The wind is blowing almost at a 90 degree angle to it... How strange... Dr: Conclusion? Adric: The weather vane is not all seems? Dr: Hmm. I think we better investigate, Adric. SCENE 5 Inside Davros' vault. Dalek1: I detect intrusion. Dalek2: (checks scanner) It is the doctor. You will alert our leader. Dalek1: I obey. (fade out/ in again) Davros: Excellent! Everything is going exactly as I planned. Is the vault door open? Dalek1: Negative. Davros: Then you make sure it is accessable for the Doctor's arrival. We wouldn't want to lock him out... Dalek1 :I obey. (Incidental music) Scene 6 In the Church Tower Adric: Be careful out there Doctor! I really don't think it's wise to go climbing out of church towers... Dr: (leaning out of window) Hmm, haven't seen one of these for a long time. Adric: Seen what? Dr: (climbing back in, holds up equipment) This! Adric: A radar reciever! Who do you think put it there? Dr: Cybermen, Yeti, Silurians, Autons?... Who knows.(pause) My guess would be Davros. Adric: Lets follow the cables, see where they lead. Dr: You are a veritable treasure trove of ideas, Adric. Adric: (looking at cables) They seem to be leading downstairs. Dr: (Rushing out) Well come on then, what are we waiting for? (sound of the two going downstairs) Adric: They vanish here into the wall, Doctor. Dr: Yes... (mulling it over).. yes. But I would guess they are heading below into the vaults. The question is how do we get in.. Adric: (walks about examining the church) (distant shout) There's a couple of doors here! Dr: (approaches) Aha! Well, let's try them,eh? ... No, second thoughts. I better try them first. I sense danger, here. Adric: (annoyed)Oh, Doctor!! Dr: No, Adric. No arguments. Wait here for me. I'll be back in a minute... (door creaks open as Dr enters) Scene 7 In Davros' Vaults beneath the church (Faint hum of machinery) (music continues) Dr: (gasp!) (talks to self) No, no, no this is all wrong! This shouldn't be here! Adric: (distant. calls down stairs) What is it? What have you found? Dr: (shouts)Machinery! (to self) Machinery that could be quite dangerous if it fell into the wrong hands... This could force a Time Lord to regenerate, or worse... Dalek1: (enters through a door) STAY WHERE YOU ARE!! Dalek2: DO NOT MOVE!! Dr: (calls out) RUN ADRIC!!! RUNN!! Dalek1: YOU WILL COME WITH US... Dalek2: OR BE EXTERMINATED... Dr: Yes, very well. very well... Dalek1: OUR LEADER AWAITS. YOU WILL FOLLOW ME. (fade out/in again) Dalek2: I BRING THE TIMELORD. Davros: Ah, Doctor. You return with an unwelcome regularity. Dr: Well, you know how it is. Some people just need keeping an eye on.. Davros: (scowls!) You are ever the jester Doctor, yet I will wipe that smirk from your face. Dr: (more seriously) What are you up to, Davros? Davros: (gloats) Since you are now my prisoner, I see no harm in letting you in on my plans. You cannot hinder me. Soon I shall share in your powers, but I will put them to a better use. Dr: What do you mean? Davros: Power to travel in time... Knowledge of what was, what is and what will be... The ability to regenerate my physical form... Dr: Are you insane? You can't just BECOME a Time Lord! Davros: (angry) I can! And I will. When my machine is complete I will become as you are....A new body, no longer will I be confined to my chair.. and power to change mistakes in the past will be mine!... (rants) My daleks will become invincible... Dr: But Time Lord powers can't just be created.. Davros: (muses) created?? No, no, probably not. But transferred, Doctor... that would be something different... Dr: What?? Davros: Yes, Doctor. YOU will donate the powers I need to conquer the galaxy!! It would kill you, but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make... END..
